Do you have TOMA in your business?

If not you need to start impelementing a TOMA system as soon as possible. Why? Because we are living in a world that is becoming more competitive in practically every industry. Those that survive and thrive in the future will be the ones thinking about TOMA today.

So what is TOMA?

It stands for Top Of Mind Awareness!

It is about owning the mindspace of your target market. When someone in your target market thinks about your business category the only person they can think of is you. Imagine the power of that. If you can own the mindspace of your target market then you will dominate the marketplace.

Often when I get called in to a business to help them with their marketing they have their focus on the acquisition of NEW prospects and clients. So the first thing I always ask them is this … what are you doing to maintain contact with your past prospects and clients?

Typically this question is met with a blank stare.

You see … most small business do nothing to keep in touch and maintain contact with past customers, clients and prospects. Huge mistake. Here is why …

Your target market will quickly forget you unless you give them a reason to remember you!

My golden rule in business is this … Never let anyone forget you.

Creating Top Of Mind Awareness is so simple to do and so powerful it amazes me that more small businesses do not have a strategy in place for it.

Let me give you an example of how powerful this can be …

About three or four months ago I attended a seminar on small business put on by the Victorian Government. At the event I briefly met a gentleman and passed my card to him. Now because I make an IO (Irresistible Offer) on the back of my business card he went to my site and requested the free report I was offering.

At that point he entered my marketing funnel. Now because I have a solid TOMA strategy in place he continued to hear from me in various formats such as this newsletter. Then as he became more interested in the VALUE I was providing his interest led to him becoming an Inner Circle Gold Member. He took up the offer of the $1 trial and became even more exposed to Attraction Marketing.

Finally he booked in for a Marketing Audit and became a valued consulting client.

Contrast this with what typically happens. Small business owner attends a networking event (or meets a prospective client through various means) . They agree they must catch up soon so they exchange cards. Then the business card gets added to the pile on the desk … and three months later when you are shuffling through your cards you wonder … who was that person. More importantly … they have forgotten you as well.

So you need to have a strategy to create and maintain top of mind awareness with your prospective clients (and even your past clients).

The great news is this … its easy to do. It can be largely automated. It can turn a chance meeting into a high paying client who becomes a raving fan and in turn starts a snowball effect of word of mouth referrals.

Creating Raving Fans!

classroomFamed business consultant Peter Drucker once said that the purpose of business is to create a customer. Personally I think he was wrong. No disrespect Mr Drucker BUT I think the true purpose of business is to create RAVING FANS.

Firstly what is a Raving Fan?

A Raving Fan to me is someone who is so passionate about your business and the work you do that they feel compelled to tell everyone they know.

As I have a need to measure things I like to put metrics around such concepts. So the way I identify Raving Fans is by the number of direct referrals that turn into paying clients. A true Raving Fan to me then is someone who refers at least one paying client a year to me.

Think about this … Imagine if you have 100 or more Raving Fans out in the market place who each refer you a minimum of 1 new paying client. How different would your business look?

Now I am assuming I do not need to tell you the power of a referral from a Raving Fan. Referred prospects come to you pre-sold generally and ready to use your product or service. Typically referred prospects do not need to be moved through the know you, like you and trust you phases before they will make a positive decision.

So why would someone become a Raving Fan of you and your business?

Well there are many reasons …

Some people will do it for LOVE! They just love what you do and what you stand for. They love to hear about the success you are having with your other clients … and they basically just fall in love with everything you do. These people typically love to spread the love!

Some people will do it because of RESULTS. You have helped them achieve such great results and they naturally want to help others they know to achieve similar results. So they will refer people they know looking for similar results. (Note: Often these people do not need to have used your product or service if they have heard about the results others are getting)

Some people will do it for MONEY. There are some people out there who are Raving Fans but it takes a little incentive like money to motivate these people to tell everyone they know about you. So consider setting up Joint Venture relationships where you pay a percentage of revenue from referrals.

Some people will do it for POSITIONING. A lot of people will refer you on to everyone they know because they want to position themselves amongst their own networks as someone who is well connected, in the know and influential.

Some people will do it to add VALUE. Many people can see the value you add to your clients and will refer you onto their networks or database to add value to them. By doing so their value goes up in the eyes of their database or networks.

Knowing why people would become a Raving Fan of you and your business enables you to develop strategies around creating more Raving Fans.

Is it possible to systematically create Raving Fans?

Yes absolutely …

In fact here are five things you can do starting today to create more Raving Fans in your business:

1/ Communicate a Vision - You are more likley to attract Raving Fans to your business when you have a big VISION for your business and you communicate it often. People will buy into your vision. They will want to support you and do everything they can to help you achieve it. Your business has to be about more than just making money … it has to be about striving to fulfill a big empowering VISION. When you develop this and communicate to people they will naturally want to help you and become more inclined to rave about you to all they know.

2/ Take A Stand - If you want people to rave about you then you need to take a stand in your industry. If you are plain vanila everyday run of the mill in your approach to your business (ie boring) then people will not be that interested in what you do. If there is no interest then there will be few referrals. Instead take a stand. Be unique. Be controversial. Stand out from the crowd. Develop strong opinions and communicate them. When you do two things will happen … some people will give you negative feedback … BUT lots more will love you because there is something different about you.

3/ Make It Easy - You want to make it easy for people to refer you onto others. To do this you can develop a range of referal devices. When we market our seminars for instance as soon as you register you are asked to refer three friends. We also send out printed tickets promoting our seminas with a value of $97. We ask people to pass them on. Having a good quality ticket like this makes it more difficult to throw them in the rubbish and more likley they will pass them on. What referral devices can you create that will make it easy for people to pass them on and thus create referrals for you.

4/ Educate Them - One of the most important things you can do is tell people that you love to get referrals. In fact you want to let them know that a large part of your business is based on referrals and that you would really appreciate it if they can refer new clients to you. If you do not let them know they may not ever think that you want referrals. So educate them.

5/ Reward & Acknowledge - When you receive a referral from a Raving Fan you want to thank them, keep them in the loop of how things are progressing and reward them. It does not take much to pick up the phone and say ‘Thanks!’. Nor does it take a lot of effort to let them know how things are progressing. Another strategy is to publicly acknowledge them for the referral.

If you apply these five strategies to your business you will find that the number of Raving Fans you develop will increase over time. Treat your Raving Fans like GOLD.

7 Ways To STAND OUT From The CROWD!

If you have attended one of my Attraction Marketing Seminars then you will have heard me talk about the Dumbing Down of Marketing Intelligence … or what Dan Kennedy calls Marketing Me-Tooism.

It happens in practically every industry …

It is probably happening in yours right now.

Within any given industry there is usually a way of doing things. A way of marketing. Its how we do it around here. Over time everyone within an industry start to observe and model what each other are doing. Over time the marketing intelligence within that industry begins to decline … or dumb down.

Think about the Real Estate industry and how every week in your letter box you get the same sort of marketing materials (just with different color schemes and logos). The message though is almost always the same.

Legal firms will take out ads in the local paper and in the ad they will talk about the services they provide, how long they have been in business, the collective experience of their partners, and their great big (expensive) logo.

Search Google for ‘Life Coaches’ then go and look at 50 Life Coaches web sites. They all say essentially the same thing … What Is Life Coaching, FAQ about Life Coaching, Why You Need A Coach, How Does Coaching Work, How Much Will It Cost You To Use Coaching.

This happens in just about every industry … we tend to replicat the marketing mistakes of each other within our industry.

Great news is this leads to opportunity for those skilled in ATTRACTION Marketing!

What you want to do is break free from the crowd. You want to stand alone and be unique in your marketing. Do not replicate the mistakes of your peers … you are better to be unique, different and attractive to your target market.

Here are 7 ideas on how you can STAND OUT from the CROWD:

1/ Be Controversial - Controversy gets attention. The more you try and take the middle road in your approach to business the more invisible you will be. When you take a strong stand and are prepared to be a little controversial then you will stand out and get noticed.

2/ Stop Marketing YOU - Truth is your target market do not really care about YOU. So stop trying to market you to them. Instead market what they want. Generally what they want is SOLUTIONS to their problems so if you orient your marketing around this you will get their attention.

3/ Stop SELLING - Most marketing is ineffective because it is trying to hard to sell. Here is a million dollar clue … your target market will sell themselves on using you if you have the right strategy in place. It is what I call Sell-U-Cation … provide the right educational material to them and they will sell themselves.

4/ Create Multiple Steps - The vast majority of people need to be taken through multiple steps (or exposures) before they will make a positive decision. Way to many small business owners though are trying to sell on step one. Big mistake. Create a multi step marketing system that you can lead prospects through where they conclude that the smartest thing they could do is use your product or service.

5/ Narrow Your FOCUS - Today you can not afford to be e generalist. You will not succeed trying to be all things to all people. What will draw potential new clients to you is narrowing your focus right down. You want to SPECIALISE and become known as the leading EXPERT in your area of speciality. Most people are more attracted to specialists who can provide specific solutions to their specific problems than they are to generalists.

6/ Stop CHASING them - The more you chase and pursue your prospective clients the faster they run from you :) Lets face it … no one likes to be sold to, right? Yet we all love to make positive decisions to buy. What you want to do is become so busy (through effective marketing) that you are booked out with a waiting list … human nature suggests that they will start to chase you and will want to work with you even more.

7/ Add a little touch of YOU - People want to work with people they know, like and trust. Sometimes you need to expose just a little of you (the real you behind the business you). By opening up and allowing your target market just a little look at who you really are beyond your business you will find that people will come and take a look out of curiosity.

So here is your challenge … how do you take these 7 ideas and apply them into your business so that you stand out from the crowd? The great news is this … It is almost certain that your competitors have never even heard of Attraction Marketing and think along these lines.
