Have you ever stopped to ask yourself why you do not respond to most marketing?

More importantly … why is your target market is ignoring your marketing material?

As a specialist in Attraction Marketing I certainly have asked this question many times. Both of my own marketing and of the marketing of my clients. Why is it that some marketing gains attention and the majority is completely ignored?

This past weekend I had the good fortune to be invited to the “Mouthing Off For Big Money” seminar which was all about building your business through speaking. At the event each of us were given the opportunity to stand up in front of 100 people and give our speech for 6 minutes. Well as you can imagine there were some nervous moments for a lot of people.

For most of in attendance though the biggest lesson came from a lady named Melissa. She had virtually everyone at the seminar in tears, managed to earn $2,300 per minute as a professional speaker without trying, and created over $65,000 in value for two people … needless to say it was a life changing experience.

How did she do all of this in just 6 minutes?

Simply by being Authentic and sharing her story of her Passion!

When Melissa was picked out of the audience to come on stage and give her speech you would never have guessed what was about to unfold. She appeared nervous and unsure … in fact she even appeared as though she was unprepared for the 6 minutes.

What she did was simply to share her story. She talked about how she had been advised by doctors that she was going blind and to prepare to live as a blind person. She mentioned how her dream had been to be a Mountain Bike Racing champion but now she feared that would never happen.

Melissa went on to explain how she took up Mountain Bike racing anyway and became quite good at it …. until she had heart related illness that doctors told her was life threatening and she had to give up Mountain Bike Racing. For 16 weeks she didn’t ride her bike … and she was miserable.

Finally she decided to get back on the bike. The Australian Championships were coming up … a 24 hour endurance event. She entered and with her 11 year old son as her only support crew she managed to come second and qualify for the World Championships in Canada.

It was an amazing story!

She gave one of the most inspiring speeches you could ever hear.

She received a standing ovation that lasted for nearly 5 minutes.

Here is the key … none of it was because she was a great speaker. She didn’t use any fancy presentation techniques. Her speech was not particularly well structured.

She simply shared her Authentic story. She opened up her heart and soul to people.

The big question out of this is … are you sharing your Authentic self?

Does your marketing share you Authentic story? How can you make your marketing more attractive through your authentic story.

Okay … many of us will not have an inspirational story to share like Melissas … however you could start by sharing WHY you do what you do and why you are so passionate about it.

So what is your Authentic story?

ShareThis

For many small business owners, marketing is something they think about when their cash flow drops off, or they haven’t got enough new business in the pipeline. This is a huge mistake!

Typically the first thing they think about is TACTICS. They want to find a new magic tactic to instantly produce a flood of new clients. They need a quick solution to the cash flow drain on their business. Sound familiar?

Thats usually when I will get a phone call … when marketing has become a necessary evil.

The problem is for most small business owners they only think about tactics. They think that if they update their website and maybe add in some video … that will do the trick. Possibly a new flyer, or what about an eMail blast out. I have even had clients who thought that if they rebrand, change their logos, new colour scheme and so on that this would result in new clients beating a path to their door.

Sadly this focus on tactics rarely ends the way small business owners hope and pray it will.

So what should they focus on?

First and foremost they must focus on developing their MARKETING STRATEGY. Without a well thought out strategy none of the tactics you play around with will work. When you have implemented the right strategy though the tactics fall into place far easier.

Here is a clue … you need to think of marketing as being a step-by-step system … not a one off cataclysmic event. You need to define and understand what each of the steps are in your marketing system. Then develop appropriate tactics to ensure that you effectively implement the strategy.

In the Attraction Marketing System I take you through seven keys. These are all designed to focus you on your strategy. We start with clearly defining your TARGET MARKET and gaining an understanding of what will make you ATTRACTIVE to them.

From there we take you through various other elements of an effective marketing system that you will need to implement. This includes developing strategies to gain visibility in your target market, centering your business around PERMISSION MARKETING (this is critical), using what I call Sell-U-Cation to presell those on your database, creating Top of Mind Awareness, and how to turn your clients into Raving FANS!

You need to have an effective Marketing System that incoporates each of these elements.

So here is what you must do at some stage. You need to block out 2 or 3 days in your schedule as time to work ON your business and not in it. Yes I know … you are busy doing stuff … however if you don’t take time out to work on your overall Marketing Strategy then you will always be chasing your tail.

Take time out and develop your marketing strategy … only then should you worry about the tactics.

As a life coach chances are good to excellent that at some stage you have scratched your head and wondered …

‘How do I market my life coaching business?’

or

‘Where do I find new clients interested in using my life coaching services?’

No doubt you are keen to attract a steady flow of new life coaching clients to you, and I am sure you do not want to come across as the pushy sales type, right?

Most life coaches will invest anywhere from $3,000 to $20,000 becoming a certified coach through one of the many coaching schools that are available.

Then they invest from $2,500 to $10,000 on a flashy looking web site, new business cards and maybe a marketing flyer or two.

More than one life coach has paid good money for display ads that build your image and brand.

Then you wait … hoping the phone rings with a steady stream of eager new clients.

hhmmm …

Okay so you decide to become proactive and start attending networking events to meet people. Who knows, you may pick up some clients at a good networking event.

The real problem though is that life coaching requires a particular marketing strategy. It is a strategy of attraction … a system designed to lead people directly to you who want to become your client.

Those super successful life coach’s that you hear about have developed an attraction marketing system. They have either done it strategically or intuitively … either way the result is the same. They have created a pipeline full of people who have their credit card in hand ready to commence work with you.

The first key to this attraction marketing system is the lead generation component.

In the next few weeks we will be releasing an opportunity for only 50 life coach’s worldwide to have a customised client attraction system developed just for you. The system will help you to attract more potential life coaching clients than you may currently have dreamed of.

Keep your eye on this blog for more details (if you are a life coach then you will want to shoot me through an email and let me know you are interested to find out more)

For now though … I want to give you a gift. Listen into this audio recording of ‘How To Market Your Life Coaching Business’

That’s right … your clients (and prospective clients) hate to be sold. They don’t like to be interrupted by telemarketers at home in the evening, they record TV onto their digital drives and skip the ads when they watch it when it suits them, they are guarded and skeptical of anything you have to say about your products or service (no matter how good they are) and they haven’t got time to review your website, marketing collateral or follow up emails.

They hate to be sold …. BUT … and this is interesting … they still LOVE to BUY!

Think about it … aren’t you like this?

If someone is trying to sell you something and you don’t really need or want it what is your natural reaction? Most of us want to turn and run, right? We hear the voice of our parents from when we are young telling us not to sign anything etc etc.

Contrast this when you have a need or desire for something.

If you have a particular need for some service in your business then what do you do today?

Yes … you probably Google it.

You do some research … you click and flick. That is where you click on the web sites that come up in your search and make a 30 second assessment if you believe that site has what you are looking for and then you give it the flick if it does not.

When you come across that one site that appears to have the right solution to your needs you maybe make contact or research some more.

The point is … today when we have a need or desire we research for a specific solution and are happy to make contact when we believe we find it … and are more than happy to make a positive purchasing decision ie we love to buy.

So how does this apply to your business?

Well if you are still using interruption marketing today and trying to sell your products or services to people who don’t want them then … well good luck for the future! The web is changing everything.

The key to marketing your business in the future is to position yourself as an expert service provider in a specialised niche and gain visibility within that niche.

When your prospective clients go searching for your solution you need to show up.

When they land on your web site you have 30 seconds … the strategy behind your web site will determine if you have any chance of building a relationship in those 30 seconds or not.

You will need to ensure your total marketing strategy facilitates the purchasing process that they buyer wants to follow.

Your marketing strategy needs to make it easy for your prospective clients to say yes to you.

When it comes to marketing for small business many small business owners have got it wrong.

They are confusing marketing tactics with marketing strategy. Let me explain …

Marketing tactics are things that small business owners do to generate more business. They tend to be isolated attempts at acquiring clients.

Confusing marketing tactics with an inteligent marketing strategy can result in a lacklustre approach to attracting new clients, and growing your business.

Designing a new business card is a marketing tactic.

Taking out an ad in the local paper, or in a trade magazine is a marketing tactic.

Putting up a web site because you have heard it is a great way to market yourself is another marketing tactic.

Printing up a thousand glossy flyers promoting your services again is another marketing tactic.

Now there is nothing wrong with all of these marketing tactics as such. In fact they are all important to any successful business. However, if there is no well thought out marketing strategy behind each of these tactics then you will fail to fully leverage your marketing efforts.

When business gets tight, the majority of small business owners will reach first for yet another marketing tactic to bring in new business. The challenge is that they may get busy again from these tactics and so they stop marketing as they fulfill their service for the new clients.

In effect they are marketing haphazardly and with little plan or strategy behind their efforts. Sound familiar?

Its great to launch a new web site for your business (tactic) but what will you do with visitors when they find your site (strategy)?

Your marketing strategy ties all of your marketing tactics together into a synergistic system that drives your business success.

A well thought out marketing strategy can transform your business. Before you spend time and money with yet another marketing tactic stop, take time out of your business and focus on your marketing strategy.

Is your marketing getting you the RESULTS you are looking for … or would you like more clients right now?

Does the thought of having to market your business and you send shivers down your spine?

Most small business owners are not entirely comfortable with having to get out there and win new business. So they run a few ads (which typically do poorly), go to a few networking events, tinker with their website and hope that someone refers them on.

This is not a strategy for SUCCESS which may explain why many small businesses do not reach their full potential.

So why is it that we don’t like the sales & marketing process?

Well have you ever heard the term ‘pushy salesman’?

Of course you have, right? We have all heard of or experienced pushy sales people before and for the most part its a huge turn off. For this reason many small business owners do not see themselves as being in sales.

Marketing is no different … there is pushy marketing as well. Push Marketing is any form of marketing that is designed to interrupt you so they can impose their marketing message on you.

I was in Hong Kong last year waiting to cross the road at the lights. I must have stepped to close to a sensor and this building beside me lit up in a full blown commercial right in my face … talk about pushy.

Push Marketing is the telemarketer rining you at 7pm at night at home when you are about to have dinner. It is the annoying TV commercials which signal time for a hot cuppa and a biscut. It is radio jingles with ever more insane and stupid character voices desperately trying to engage a disinterested audience.

Push Marketing is the person on the street corner who trys to stop you as you pass so you can sponsor some poor child in Africa.

Push Marketing is the full page advertisment in your favourite magazine that flick past in search of your favourite articles. It is the letter box full of JUNK MAIL.

Push Marketing is the countless emails we receive telling us we will miss out if we don’t buy their super duper once in a lifetime product with a hundred bonuses TODAY!

Push Marketing is every attempt a business makes to push their marketing message out and INTERRUPT you long enough that you might make a positive buying decision.

Push Marketing … most people think it SUCKS … most small business owners don’t want to use it.

Big problem is that Push Marketing is the only form of marketing that most people are aware of.

Think about this … what if every Real Estate agent in Australia agreed that they would no longer advertise any houses for sale. Sellers would save thousands! But what would happen to the Real Estate market … do you really think people would stop buying and selling property? Of course not … however the entire industry dynamic would change.

So what is the alternative?

Well instead of trying to PUSH yourself and your business onto the unsuspecting public … what would happen if you could attract clients to you?

How different would your business be if you could literally PULL new clients to you in a steady stream?

Would your business become more PROFITABLE if you had a waiting list of clients? Could you increase your FEES?

Consider this … how come brain surgeons don’t have to use PUSH marketing?

It is because there are few of them, there is a high demand for their service, they charge a lot, they are always referred, they are perceived to be industry leaders, they have specialized knowledge, and they are well connected amongst their peers and associates.

If you could model your business along similar lines is it possible that you could PULL clients to you?

Could your business become so magnetic that clients seek you out?

If there is a demand for what you do … in other words there are enough people out there willing to pay you for your service, then you could model your business in such a way that you attract more clients than you will ever need.

The key is to break away from how everyone else in your industry is marketing because most of them are using Push Marketing which as we have discussed no longer works.

You want to think about how you can have people seek you out, engage them in conversation, build a relationship with them, help them articulate their needs, and lead them to their own conclusion which is to use your service … after all … you are the only one out there helping them rather than trying to sell them.

Imagine the possibilities …

If you have listened into the most recent Profit Minute Radio program you will understand what the Ultimate Formula is and how to apply it.

If you have not listened to it yet then you can do so here.

The Ultimate Formula for Business Success is quite simple, and chances are good that you already know what it is. The question is are you applying it?

There is a huge difference in results determined by your ability to be able to implement what you know. Knowing alone is not enough. Successful implementation of the right strategies is key.

So the strategies we talked about in ‘The Ultimate Formula for Business Success’ where:

1/ Identify a school of Hungry Fish – where do they gather. Go fishing where the hungry fish are gathered. Think about going deep into the right niche.

2/ Find out what they are hungry for – it may not be what you think. Orient your business offering around what they want.

3/ Position yourself amongst them and become part of the conversation. Become recognised as a person of authority amongst the fish.

4/ Utilise leverage in your business model. Use a net to fish rather than a single line.

5/ Have a structured product funnel that you systematically lead them through from Free to high end client.

6/ Know You, Like You, Trust You … or how to create TOMA. <<< This is critical. Do not apply mass market product style marketing to a knowledge based niche service provider business.

7/ Turn them into Raving Fans – Create buzz about your business by having everyone talk about you. Provide them with the tools to make it easy to refer you. (Click on the Share This icon and share this blog with a small business owner you know as an example).

If you can structure your small business around these 7 key areas then you will easily attract your ideal customer to you. Failure to do so may lead to your business becoming invisible and suffering a lack of paying clients.

We will be covering each of these 7 key areas in more detail in the future in this blog and via Profit Minute Radio.
