Update From Rod

Rod mooreWelcome To Another Weeks Attraction Marketing Newsletter.

Well its June which means two things in Melbourne ... winter is here and so is the end of the financial year. Both incredibly exciting events :)

So big question for you ... will you go into the new financial year without having developed an effective Marketing Plan? As I present my Attraction Marketing Seminars around the country I always ask who has a marketing plan. The response? Less than 5% of small business owners have one. How is this possible? Simple ... most of the text book theories and marketing plan templates are a waste of time and take too long. In todays newsletter I will show you a simple outline of what you need to consider to include in your marketing plan.

If you require more assistance then grab a copy of our Marketing Plan Guide which we have heavily discounted for readers of this newsletter.

Tickets are selling well for the next Mega Networking & Referral Event ... right now we have a special pre-release of VIP tickets available for those who have previously attended the event. The main release of tickets will happen in July. If you want to be notified of when tickets are generally available then best suggestion is to place your name on the Priority Notification list.

A big welcome to all of our new members who have joined recently. Great to have so many of you joining us and I am sure that you will find lots of valuable information on how to grow your business.

Developing An Effective Marketing Plan

As I present at various locations around the country on Attraction Marketing I always ask the audience if they have a marketing plan ... what I find is that less than 5% of small business owners have a documented marketing plan!

In this article I want to take a look at the key areas to focus on when developing a marketing plan.We will not be discussing the usual text book theory of writing a marketing plan. Those of you who know me know that I am into what works and what can be easily implemented into your business today.

Having said that I do believe that it is important to spend some time thinking through your marketing plan and developing the right strategies for your business. Without a least an outline of a plan you are really guessing about how to achieve success in your business.

So here are the key elements that I would look at when developing an effective marketing plan:

1/ Define Your Vision - All success in business starts with having a clear VISION of what your business is all about. You want to spend some time reflecting on the purpose of your business, your mission, the values you will adhere to and so on. Without a clear vision of where you would like to get to in five years any plan will do ... even no plan will do. A clearly defined vision however establishes a framework to develop a plan within. As Steven Covey author of '7 Habits Of Highly Effective People' once said ... you should begin with the end in mind.

Ask yourself these questions ...

'What do you want your business to look like in five years time?' ... Why?
'What impact do you want the business to have on the world?' ... Why?
'What do you personally want from your business'? ... Why?
'What role do you want to be playing in the business in five years time'?

Now write a two or three paragraph MISSION statement based on the answers to the above.

2/ Set Reasonable Objectives - Once you have clearly defined your vision the next step is to set reasonable objectives or goals. Tony Robbins says that most people over estimate what they can achieve in one year and dramatically underestimate what they could achieve in five years. So think about this in the context of setting goals for your business.

My belief is that you should set one year goals for your business, then work these back into quarterly and monthly goals. So what should you set goals for? How about these as a starting point:

Total Revenue
Total Net Profit
Number of  Clients / Customers
Lifetime Value of Clients / Customers
Leads Generated
Leads Converted to Clients / Customers
Market Share
Product / Service Range
Profitable Joint Ventures In Place

These are just some of the key areas to think of when setting your goals for the business. Again make them a little conservative for the one year mark. Don't fall into the trap of setting a goal to develop your business into a $1 Million a year business if your current turnover is $70,000 (unless there is good reason to do so)

3/ Understand The Key Numbers - As you start working towards your goals the next key thing is understand and monitor your key numbers in your business. Three of the most important numbers from a marketing perspective are:

Lifetime Value of A Customer / Client - This is the total amount an average customer will spend in your business during the lifetime of their relationship with your business. Too many small business owners only consider the initial spend of a customer when looking at the value of the customer. eg A Hairdresser might see a client as being a $50 client when they come in for a haircut. In reality if they come in 8 times a year and stay with you for 5 years then they are really worth $2,000 each. Knowing this information tells you how much to invest to acquire each new client.

Average Cost To Generate A Lead - Before you can acquire a new customer or client though you need to generate leads. So the next most important thing is to know the cost to generate a single lead in your business. Not all leads will turn into clients for instance but lead generation and your investment in lead generation is vital to the success of your business.

Average Cost To Generate A Customer
- Finally how much does it cost to acquire each new customer. In the example of our hairdresser for instance where the life time value is $2,000 it makes sense to invest say 5% of that amount to acquire a new client, or in this case $100. So lets say you placed an ad in the local paper that cost you $600 and acquired 12 new clients for then the Average Cost To Generate A Customer would be $50 so this would be extremely profitable when looking at the lifetime value of  the client.

Knowing these numbers is critical to developing your marketing strategy.

4/ Lead Generation - Now that we have a handle on the key numbers in our business we turn our attention to lead generation. This is a broad subject that requires us looking at our target market, who our ideal client is and how we can be attractive to these ideal clients. It also requires you to look at how you will develop and grow your database of leads for your business. What will be your strategy to capture and manage these leads?

5/ Marketing Funnel - Once you have the lead generation process working and you are busy building a database of prospective clients the next key for you is to then develop your marketing funnel. The simple way to look at your marketing funnel is to ask yourself this ... What are the logical steps you will take your leads through to have them desire to want to use your product or service.

Many businesses fail simply because they have never thought through and designed the logical sequence of events that must occur to turn leads into clients.

Within the marketing funnel you will also consider the mix of products and services you offer. This is critical. In order to turn more of your leads into clients you will need to provide different levels of products and services. One of the smartest ways to grow your business is to use what is known as the ascension model where you bring clients in on a low entry level product and then progressively ascend them to higher dollar value products / services over time.

6/ Purple Cow - What is going to make your business different, unique and stand out from the crowd? Today more than ever this is a vital question to ask. There is a real need to differentiate your business today in order to capture and hold the ATTENTION of your target market.

There are a number of strategies you could employ to compete such as price based, service based, uniqueness, methodology etc. You need to assess the best strategy for you to compete.

7/ TOMA Strategy - As you grow your business you will have a growing list of leads (prospective clients), current clients and passed clients. This list is the lifeblood of your business and possibly the most valuable asset your business has. The problem is most small business owners have no strategy to gain TOMA with this list (top of mind awareness).

So the next part of your marketing plan is to devise your TOMA strategy. This could be as simple as sending a weekly newsletter via email to more complex strategies. One thing is certain ... if you don't work hard to maintain TOMA with your list they will soon forget you.

8/ Action Steps - Finally most business plans and marketing plans once complete get filed under the desk never to be looked at again. What you want to do is develop an action plan to implement all of the ideas in your marketing plan. Then schedule this action plan into your calendar and take action to get the nessary steps put into place.

If you follow this simple outline for your marketing plan then you will wind up with a powerful document that can drive the success of your business into the future. For more help on this grab a copy of our Marketing Plan Guide mentioned above.

Recommended - Six Minutes To Success
I am a great believer in conditioning your mind for success. There is no place where this is more essential than in Small Business. We have to constantly gaurd our minds against negative media reports, complaining employees and more.

That is why when I came across a new program by Bob Proctor called Six Minutes To Success I joined straight away. I have been a big fan of Bob's work for close to twenty years. His insight into mindset and success comes from more than forty years of studying material like 'Think & Grow Rich'

The Six Minutes To Success program is a daily program where Bob delivers a brief video message that will challenge your thinking, provoke you to make new decisions and set new goals. It is very inspiring and I believe a great way for any Small Business owner to program their minds for success.
