Well the Mega Networking Event is finally here. This Friday more than 135 plus small business owners will be gathering for the first event of its kind over 3 days. The focus is on helping the business owners attending to promote and grow their business. The event will be full of networking opportunities, referral roundtables, JV possibilities and much more. Five Tips For More Effective Networking

When asked about the most effective strategy for gaining new clients many small business owners will tell you its networking.

Attending networking events has proven to be a great way for many small business owners to find new clients for their business. Yet an equal number of people who have attended networking events have failed to get the results they were looking for.


How can this be? More importantly ... how can you become more effective at networking to attract even more clients to you?

Let me share with you five keys to more effective networking:

1/ The Drill Bit vs The Hole - Last year in Australia 287,000 10 millimeter drill bits where sold. Interestingly not one of the 287,000 people wanted a 10 millimeter drill bit. So what did they all want? They all wanted a 10 millimeter hole.

How does this relate to networking and finding clients?

Well when you meet people at a networking event and they ask you what do you do how you respond makes all the difference in the world. Most people naturally will talk about the drill bit. So if you are a financial planner you talk about financial planning. If you are a marketing consultant you inform people that you are a marketing consultant.

This is okay but you may find it gives you limited results. Instead talk about the end benefit of what you do ... ie the hole. So our financial planner could say 'I help people create wealth and peace of mind'. The marketing consultant might say ... 'I help small business owners find new clients'.

Can you see how stating what you do in terms of the end benefit is far more appealing and automatically leads the other person to ask ... 'How do you do that?'

2/ Ditch The Pitch - Many people approach networking events like everyone is a prospect for what they do. So they develop a well rehearsed pitch and go around giving it to everyone. They launch into their sales pitch at every opportunity. The problem with this approach is that instead of leading people to want to do business with you it will push people away.

3/ Select The Right Events - Not every networking event is going to be the right one for you. You want to find events where there is either your target market ... or potential JV partners. Finding either at a networking event would be a good outcome. So how do you find the right events? One of the best ways is to subscribe to a comprehensive networking directory. In Australia we are fortunate to have Networking World which lists all of the networking events happening around town each month. It is a great resource to locate suitable events.

4/ Open Mind - When attending networking events and meeting new people it is critical to keep an open mind. You might meet someone who are not a prospective client of JV partner and think that is where the relationship ends. My belief is it is critical to keep an open mind as each person you meet probably knows anywhere from 100 to 500 other people. Within their networks is probably lots of potential clients and JV partners. So keep an open mind with everyone you meet.

5/ Follow Up - Follow up is a key to achieveing results from networking. If you do not follow up then chances are good your networking efforts will not amount to much. With effective follow up though you can achieve great results. I always make a point to follow up by sending a Thank You card to everyone. Often I have sent my products to people I have just met as a gift. You could send products such as CD programs. This is certainly one way of becoming memorable and standing out from everyone else they met at the event.

If you implement these five keys to more effective networking then you can easily build a successful business from just attending a networking event each week.
